There's no place in the world quite like Chefchaouen. Tucked into the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco, this small city of 45,000 people has become one of the most photographed destinations on earth β and for good reason. Its medina is painted in every shade of blue imaginable, from pale sky to deep cobalt, creating a dreamlike visual experience that feels almost too beautiful to be real.
But Chefchaouen is more than its Instagram reputation. It's a living, breathing city with a rich history, incredible food, and some of the warmest hospitality in Morocco. Here's everything you need to know.
Why Is Chefchaouen Blue?
This is the question everyone asks. The honest answer is: nobody agrees on a single origin story. The most common explanation is that Jewish refugees who settled here in the 1930s brought the tradition of painting buildings blue β a colour associated with divinity and heaven in Jewish tradition. Another theory is that blue repels mosquitoes. A third is that it was simply painted blue for tourists in the 1970s.
Whatever the reason, the tradition has stuck and been embraced by the whole community. Today, residents voluntarily repaint their walls in fresh blues every year β it's become a source of local pride, not just a tourist attraction.
When to Visit Chefchaouen
The best time to visit is spring (MarchβMay) or autumn (OctoberβNovember). Temperatures are mild (18β25Β°C), the light is beautiful, and the mountain air is refreshing. The Rif Mountains mean the city is cooler than Marrakech or Fes even in summer, making it a viable destination year-round. Avoid peak summer weeks in August when it can get crowded with domestic tourists.
How to Get to Chefchaouen
- From Fes: 3.5 hours by car or bus β the most common route
- From Tangier: 2 hours β great for a northern Morocco circuit
- From Casablanca: 4β5 hours β good as a multi-day trip north
- From Marrakech: 6β7 hours β usually combined with a multi-day tour
π‘ Local Tip: The most rewarding way to visit Chefchaouen is as part of a multi-day private tour β combining it with Fes and the Rif Mountains gives you a northern Morocco experience that's completely different from the south. We offer 2-day and 4-day Chefchaouen tours from Fes, Marrakech, and Casablanca.
What to Do in Chefchaouen
Wander the Medina
The medina is small enough to explore on foot in a couple of hours, but you'll want to spend much longer. The best time is early morning (before 9am) when the light is soft and the streets are empty of other tourists. Explore the Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the main square, and the Spanish Mosque above the city.
Hike to the Spanish Mosque
A 20-minute uphill walk from the medina brings you to a ruined Spanish mosque with panoramic views over the blue city and the surrounding Rif Mountains. Go at sunrise or sunset for the best photography.
Akchour Waterfalls Day Trip
30 minutes from Chefchaouen, the Akchour waterfalls and natural pools are one of the most beautiful hidden spots in northern Morocco. A full-day hike through cedar forest and river valleys with a refreshing swim at the end.
Where to Eat
Chefchaouen has excellent food β a distinctive northern Moroccan cuisine influenced by Andalusian and Berber traditions. Must-try dishes include goat cheese (the region is famous for it), ras el hanout spiced kefta, and msemen (layered flatbread) with honey and argan oil for breakfast.
Photography Tips
- Go out at golden hour (6β8am) for empty streets and soft light
- The blue streets behind the kasbah are the most photogenic β less visited than the main square area
- Ask before photographing locals β many are happy to pose but appreciate the courtesy
- Bring a wide-angle lens β the narrow alleyways reward it
